Bettye Baskin Obituary

Crowned in grace, Mrs. Bettye Wheeler Baskin lived a life distinguished by an unwavering devotion to lifting others. She was born September 5, 1943, in Marion County, to Mr. Davis Wheeler and Mrs.

Essie Mae Wheeler. As the second of six children—Herman (Eddye) Beard, Doris Wheeler (preceded In death), Hazen Wheeler, Raymond (Vangela) Wheeler, and Recha (Angela) Wheeler—her childhood was steeped in love, and from a young age, she learned the power of perseverance, humility, and resilience, virtues that became hallmarks of her character.

As a student, Bettye excelled at Fessenden School and continued her studies at Walker’s Business College in Jacksonville before landing her first professional role at Florida Memorial College. Her academic preparation fortified the beginning of a distinguished 33-year tenure with the Alachua County Public School System, where she served with excellence in Clerical Support and emerged as a trusted and influential presence in the lives of countless students. She played an integral role in the Pre-Collegiate Program at Eastside High School and offered exemplary service as Secretary of the International Baccalaureate Program and the Dean’s Office. In these capacities, she mentored with intention, encouraged with compassion, and upheld an unwavering belief in the boundless potential of young people.

Her devotion to innovation and community positioned her as a true trailblazer, exemplified through her role as co-founder of B & J Teddy Bear Models. This pioneering spirit also guided her in advancing the mission behind the establishment of The Gainesville Courier, a monthly publication dedicated to preserving and elevating the stories, histories, and voices of the local community.

Guided by an abiding faith and a calling to serve, she carried this same devotion into her ministry at Springhill Missionary Baptist Church. As Youth Director, her visionary creativity came alive through her direction of the beloved Christmas Cavalcade, a treasured annual production that captured the hearts of the community and aired on local cable for 16 years.

Bettye also served faithfully within the Alachua County Chapter of Charmettes, Inc., where she dedicated more than 15 years to strengthening programs, expanding outreach, and uplifting women and families. She served as Chapter President for four years and later as Vice President, contributing to initiatives such as Cancer Awareness programs, Hospice outreach, Nursing Home support, Habitat for Humanity partnerships, and the highly successful Breakfast for Madame fundraiser. Her dedication earned her nominations for the Gwendolyn Baker Rogers Spirit Award and the Frankie Drayton Spirit Award, reflecting her unmatched commitment to service. Bettye was also a faithful member of the Red Hatters and The Black Hat Divas.

A woman of boundless warmth, vision, and strength, Mrs. Bettye Baskin touched lives as a leader, mentor, servant, and friend. Her legacy is one of excellence, compassion, and unshakeable faith.
