David Leslie Obituary

David Alvis Leslie unexpectedly passed away on June 6, 2024 at the age of 76.
David was born on October 9, 1947 in Evansville, IN to Lloyd and Nina Leslie. David spent his formative years in Evansville and graduated from Evansville North High School in 1965. He attended Oakland City University in Oakland City, IN where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education. He went on to earn a Master of Theology with a concentration in Christian Education and Social Work from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and Master of Science in Social Work from the Kent School of Social Work at the University of Louisville.

David spent the majority of his career working to develop affordable housing options for those most in need. In addition, he worked in the areas of child welfare, mental health, vocational rehabilitation, and social work. David was also a talented carpenter and homebuilder and enjoyed completing historic preservation projects as a licensed contractor.

David had a wonderful sense of humor, was an avid reader, a lifelong learner, volunteer, and a true advocate for those who needed help. He was an incredible grandfather and made a priority of being involved in his grandchildren’s lives. Whether it was attending special events or taking time to teach a skill he strived to do all he could to be a positive influence. David was a loving father and stressed the importance of serving others who are less fortunate than ourselves.
Prior to moving to Florida, David was a member of Jeff Street Baptist Church in Louisville, KY and was actively involved in their social justice efforts. He attended the United Church of Gainesville when he resided in Florida.

David is survived by his former wife, Beverly Leslie (Clarksville, IN) and their son, Jonathan Leslie and daughter-in-law Lalita Pourchot Leslie (Alachua, FL); daughter, Jill Leslie (Georgetown, IN), and four grandchildren, Haridas Leslie and Karuna Leslie (Alachua, FL), Reece Ausmus and Janie Ausmus (Georgetown, IN); and his sister Dona Bidula (Bethel Park, PA). David was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Nina Leslie, brother, James Leslie, and nephew David Glen Leslie.

A memorial service will be held at Wall Street United Methodist Church, 240 Wall Street, Jeffersonville, IN 47130 on Sunday, June 30 with visitation from 2 – 4:00 PM followed immediately by a brief service.

Honoring David’s generous wish, his final act of kindness was to give the gift of life through organ and tissue donation.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks people to consider a donation to Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (www.donatelifeky.org) or the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (https://afsp.org).
