Nancy Black Shaffer, 74, of Earleton, Florida, passed away at home on April 28th.
Born in Columbia, South Carolina to Dr. Herbert and Mae Black on July 3rd, 1948, she attended Dreher High School and graduated in 1966. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Queens College in Charlotte, NC, and a master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from The University of Florida.
Nancy spent 35 years working for the State of Florida, first as a counselor and supervisor with the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation then as a personnel specialist at North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center. Following her work with the state of Florida, she worked for twelve years as a testing administrator at Pearson VUE. She and a friend established aclothing boutique in support of Grace Marketplace’s mission to end homelessness. Pathfinders Sunday School and the Women’s Group at Trinity United Methodist were also a source of joy where she devoted much of her time. When not engaged with her community, she enjoyed Gator basketball, attendedmultiple Final Four tournaments, read fiction, and never missed an episode of American Idol.
Nancy is preceded in death by her mother and father. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, David Shaffer, sons Mark & Todd, sisters Jane & Barbara.
A service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church at 4000 NW 53rd Ave, Gainesville, FL 32653 on June 3rd at 11AM with Reverend Marisa Gertz Copeland of Trinityofficiating. Interment will follow in the garden at Trinity United Methodist Church.
