Phyllis Ruth Durbin was born in Cleveland, OH, on July 25, 1929 to James E. & Laura N. Durbin. She lived in Lyndhurst, a suburb of Cleveland until she was 7 years old.
The family then took a trip to Ft. Collins, CO to visit her maternal grandfather's brother, Roy Nye. They returned to Lyndhurst just long enough to pack their belongings and move to Ft. Collins. Her father found work with the Public Service Company which took them to Cheyenne, WY, for 6 month; then to Estes Park, CO, for 3 years; and finally to Denver, CO.
After graduating from East High School in 1947, she attended the University of Colorado (Boulder) for one year. During the following summer she met Emanuel W. (Buzz) Sandberg. That fall, she transferred to the University of Denver on a scholarship. However, their marriage in April of 1949 ended her studies. They adopted three children, Carolyn Kay in 1955, Steven James in 1958, and David Scott in 1960. Two other children were born to Buzz and Phyllis, Eric Paul in 1961 and Laurel Clair in 1963. The marriage ended in September, 1976.
In 2000, Phyllis moved from Tallahassee, FL, to Melrose, FL..
For the last 26 years, she enjoyed time with her children, her 7 grandchildren, and her 4 great grandkids. She sang in the choir at the Methodist church and volunteered at the church thrift shop. Two of the great joys of her final years were planting flowers in her yard, and spoiling Cassie and Andy, her loving dogs. Phyllis was 96 when she left us for the choir of heaven.
