A devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and engineer, Roland led a life marked by dedication to his family, and service to his country.
Roland was born on September 30th 1933, in Chicago, Illinois and later moved to Miami, Florida. Roland studied at the University of Florida before being drafted by the US army. He served from 1951 to 1953, stationed in France. Post enlistment he returned to UF and completed his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and subsequently earned his Master of Business Administration.
One of his early jobs was working at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, where he helped draft mechanical components for the engines of the SR-71 Blackbird. He retired from Gainesville Regional Utilities.
Roland and Norma, lifelong sweethearts, built a partnership rooted in love, teamwork, and a shared purpose. They learned to fly airplanes, becoming pilots, and flew a Cessna 172 cross country, flying over the Grand Canyon and back to Florida. They also made a trip to the Western US, bringing enduro motorcycles, riding trails and roads in the Rocky Mountains, even to 12,000 feet in Estes Park, Colorado.
Together, they raised two sons who became Eagle Scouts. Roland had numerous camping trips along the way, including a week long river canoeing trip through Florida and a week long backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail.
Beyond his professional achievements and adventures, Roland was deeply committed to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Norma, their son Evan and wife Mayra, granddaughters Allison and Sara; and son Craig Carter and wife Kelly Denney. His legacy lives on through them and through all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Roland Thorsby Carter, Jr will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering integrity, and enduring contributions to both his family and his field. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
