Mother Sallie Fagan Hollis was born January 25, 1923, in Perry, Florida, to the late Charlie Fagan and Ida Mae Fagan. She and her family moved from Perry, Florida, to Alachua, Florida, finally settling in Gainesville, Florida, in 1925. She was the eldest child and was preceded in death by her siblings, Lillie Bell Lucky, Charlie Fagan, and Mildred Perry, Mother Sallie was called home on February 12, 2025, at the age of 102 years old.
Mother Sallie was educated in Alachua Public Schools at Lincoln School from kindergarten to 12th grade. Only 15 days after graduating from high school, she enlisted in the military joining the Women's Army Corps (WAC). She returned home from the military on June 21, 1946, and later married Mr. Leroy Hollis. To this union five beautiful daughters were born, Nancy, Diana, Nadine, Norma, and Noel. Mother Sallie was the owner of Sallie's Beauty Salon and a successful business woman in that field for over 60 years in Gainesville.
Mother Sallie gave her life to the Lord and became a member of Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ, where she served faithfully until later joining the Church of God by Faith. At the Church of God by Faith she matured in the Lord and she served faithfully under the late Bishop James E. McKnight, Sr., for decades until his retirement. Bishop James McKnight, Sr., cherished her as one of his faithful and eldest members. She remained a treasure to the body of Christ as a member of the Church of God by Faith at Gainesville under the leadership of Dr. Erta Livingston until her death.
Mother Sallie will remain in the memory and hearts of her children: Nancy Lawson, Diana Hollis James (Bobby), Ida Nadine Howard (Henry), Norma Salroy Curry-Harris (Donald), and Noel Dollaree Hollis (Larry); grandchildren, Darien Lawson (Mel), Amy Mohr (Jonathan), Kellie Howard, Joshua Howard, Sr., (Kaytee), Mikayla Harris, Kateena James, and Delvin James, Sr; great-grandchildren, Armani Lawson, Alex Lawson, Tyler Lawson, Joshua Howard, Jr., Artis Howard, Muse Howard, Delvin James, Jr., and Shakira Buchanan; great-great-grandchild, Alora Lawson; a devoted niece, Paula Sanders; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.
