Mrs. Thelma Clark, “Granny” as she is loving known by everyone; was born in Earlton, Florida on December 31, 1929 to the loving parents of Eddie Aldridge and Patience Carter. Granny’s mother passed away from pneumonia when she was very young, about 4 years old. She remembers her father being a very loving person and a very hard worker and a good father. Granny was baptized at a very early age in Starke and has been a member of Springhill MB Church for many years.
In 1945, she moved to Starke Florida, where she met and married Ulysses Clark, Sr. (Divorced/Deceased). They were the proud parents of Nine children of which seven are living. In 1967, they moved from their home in Starke Fl, to Gainesville, to a newly built subdivision called “Lincoln Estates”. She lived and watched her family grow in that home the past 57 years. From this home, Granny has raised her kids, helped raise her grandkids; and some of her great grand kids. We were taught to be quiet when company comes over, and play together if not, kiss and make up. She was the peace maker but she didn’t spare the rod, it was all out of love. As adults we now appreciate all the platted switches and time-outs we got as children. We could all go to her to get real-life advice. Granny had a strong faith, belief in God. She watched one of her sons join the Army, where he was sent to battle many times. She wrote him letters, we prayed for him and sent him care packages, and waited for him to come home safely; which he did! Our belief and faith began with our grandparents, and Granny made sure she taught us to pray, sing hymns and trust in the Lord.
Granny was the babysitter for her first four grands who were with her all the time while their parents were at work. Granny would pick them up every morning driving her big shiny green 4-door Chevy with the white top. She went everywhere in that car, and we were made to sit still and be quiet, way before any seat belt law came into effect. – that was “Granny’s law”. She was also a babysitter for many other grandchildren and kids in the neighborhood. Of course, this was not something that was going to make her rich but something she that loved doing. She loved children and helping those who were trying to help themselves. There were many grandchildren and neighborhood kids that caught the bus in front of granny’s house. Parents knew that Granny would watch out for their children getting on and off the bus. These children are adults now and they still come by, blow their car horns, stop by to say “Hello” or to wish her a Happy Birthday. Many days you could look over at 1509 and you’d see her on the porch, smiling and waving at anyone who pass by.
So, join us today in the Celebration of Life for our phenomenal woman Mrs. Thelma Clark, “Granny”, a blessing to this family and all that knew her.
